Superficial Radiotherapy: No Cutting, Scarring or Down Time

old man and the doctor

Dr. Jason Green knows a lot about skin cancer, as both a doctor and a patient. “I have been a dermatologist since 2002, and I had my first skin cancer removed in 2005.” Dr. Green grew up in South Florida, and, like many of us, spent a lot of time outdoors. His skin was damaged before he decided to go to medical school. His time on the receiving treatment side of the table taught him a lot, however. “I’ve been there as a patient,” he explained. “It’s a very different process.” That experience has led him to design a patient-centered practice.

Dr. Green is friendly and approachable. He presents all of the available options to patients and helps them understand what approach will be the most effective for them. “I want my patients to be comfortable with everything here – the staff, our high quality of care, and the treatment they receive.” The office provides both cosmetic and clinical dermatology services and is one of just a few dermatologists in Florida to offer Superficial Radiotherapy (SRT) for non-melanoma skin cancers.

There are more than 5 million new cases of non- melanoma skin cancer diagnosed in the United States every year. Although most of us take steps to prevent sun damage as adults, many of us, like Dr. Green and so many of his patients, are being treated for sun damage that is decades old.

“We offer SRT as an alternative to surgical treatment for skin cancer. It’s painless for the patient and involves no downtime, no cutting, and no scarring. It is quickly becoming the standard in care for non-melanoma skin cancer,” said Dr. Green. It is also covered by all insurance companies.

Although these cancers can be anywhere on the body, they often appear on the skin of the face, head, ears, hands or arms. Scarring can be a significant concern for patients. “These cancers often appear on the face. The traditional surgical treatment can be disfiguring, resulting in a misshapen nose or lips. With SRT, we don’t see any of those issues,” Dr. Green said. SRT works on the damage on the surface of the skin. It takes a series of applications, after which the area will peel, while new skin grows in beneath it. The doctor will determine how many visits are necessary to complete treatment. “It’s a completely different kind of treatment. The patient has no discomfort and can go right back to their daily activities. It is very much like getting an x-ray for them.”

The success rate is over 95%, just like the previous surgical treatments. “We’ve been using it for a few years now, and I’m thrilled with the results that we’re getting.”

Green Dermatology & Cosmetic Center offers a wide variety of services beyond treating skin cancer. “We have a number of cosmetic treatments and products to help your skin look the best that it can,” said Dr. Green. They offer Botox, Juvederm, Kybella, Bellafill, laser hair removal, and many other services. They also treat other clinical issues. “We treat patients with all kinds of skin issues. Acne, shingles, rosacea, and eczema are some of the many problems we deal with.” Dr. Green and his competent, professional staff can assist you with the diagnosis and treatment of any skin disorder.
