Who says skincare is just for women? Men need to pay just as much attention to their skin care products, skin care practices and skincare routine as any woman does.
That’s why this month, Green Dermatology & Cosmetic Center, a premier medical and cosmetic dermatology center near Boca, is focused on educating the men out there all about the best in men’s skincare.
Some men are notorious for keeping things simple and straightforward, but sometimes it’s necessary to dive a bit deeper and learn more about how to properly and effectively take care of the skin. Women aren’t the only ones who want healthier, younger-looking skin, so guys, listen up — this ones for you.
The basic elements of skincare between men and women are similar, but let’s be honest, a man is much less likely to primp and groom themselves the same way a woman does. Men don’t realize that a few simple changes in their skin care routine can work wonders for their skin, and there’s nothing complicated about it.
Let’s start with the one thing that is different about a man’s skin care routine: shaving.
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, dermatologist-recommended tips for shaving include using a single- or double-blade razor if you frequently experience razor bumps or ingrown hairs. Men are also advised to be sure to avoid stretching the skin taut while shaving. It’s also important to wet the skin before shaving in order to soften it, use moisturizing shaving cream, shave in the direction of hair growth, and rinse after each swipe. The AAD also recommends changing the blade every 5-7 times to minimize irritation. After-shave is another important element here. It helps to hydrate and soothe the skin, according to this Huffington Post article on skincare tips for men, which also recommends an alcohol-free after-shave to prevent the skin from drying out.
Additional dermatologist-recommended skin care practices for men, as per the American Academy of Dermatology, including making sure to wash the face daily both before and after exercise using a mild facial cleanser and lukewarm water; and moisturizing the face and body daily right after bathing, showering or shaving while the skin is still damp. Just as with women, it’s equally as important for men to wear sunscreen whenever outdoors to help prevent wrinkles, age spots, and skin cancer. For best protection, use a water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more, and apply every two hours or right after swimming or sweating.
Men should be aware of the fact that after the age of 50, they have a higher risk of developing melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. This makes checking the skin from head to toe regularly a no-brainer, and something that should be taken seriously.
For those adventurous men who may already have their go-to skincare routine in place, but want a little something extra… Green Dermatology & Cosmetic Center has you covered with various injectables to keep the skin looking fresh, plump and as young as ever. These cosmetic treatments offered include Botox, Dysport, and fillers such as Juvederm, Kybella and Voluma.
